Ben Nicky – Avalon Hollywood
In my opinion, the trance community is all about expanding your mind to new music. I personally love to expand my tastes and open my mind to new trance. This past weekend, Ben Nicky surely impressed me with his set at Avalon and I now know how he has made a name for himself in the trance world. For someone who is under Paul van Dyk’s label (Vandit Records), he is surely one artist that we are closely following. This show was a last minute decision, but I was beyond happy that I decided to go.
Ben Nicky’s set started extremely hard and went right into deep 140 trance and immediately the beat took over my body. He featured our favorite classic tracks but mashed it up with his unique melodic sound. I completely lost it when he dropped a mashup of ‘Rapture’ by Nadia Ali and ‘Walter White’ by Above & Beyond. Two of my favorites tracks joined together surely sent goosebumps down my spine. Roxanne Emery also made an appearance at Avalon and Ben Nicky dropped a few of her tracks including, ‘On Fire’ and ‘Shelter.’ These two tracks definitely had the vocal trance fanatics in tears. She made an appearance on stage during ‘Shelter’ and the crowd went crazy and I know that moment will stay with me forever.
As the end of his set drew to a close, he decided to ‘mindf**k’ everyone by winding (not really) down with some extremely dark beats. It’s extremely rare for someone I have never seen before pull me in with their amazing music. Ben Nicky knew all the right ways to make this the best set of my year so far. His talent is underestimated because he’s not yet a mainstage name, but his true trance sound has easily become one of my favorites. Ben was nice enough to take a picture with us at the end of his set, he also thanked us for coming. That is the amazing thing about trance DJs, they know who their fans are and know how loyal we are to them. After this experience, I am ecstatic to hear him perform at Dreamstate.
